Small Weights Pack a Punch
by Clare Dunphy
Incorporating Reformer exercises onto the mat for your Pilates practice can introduce a whole new dimension to your routine, offering variety and challenge. This innovative approach can significantly elevate your practice, providing benefits for both seasoned enthusiasts and beginners alike.
I first encountered the concept of Reformer exercises on the Mat at Drago’s gym while learning from the renowned Romana as an apprentice. Instead of merely observing, we were encouraged to follow along on the Mat and replicate the exercises being performed on the Reformer. I was pleasantly surprised by the demanding yet immensely rewarding nature of these exercises. Through this experience, I learned to internalize the feeling of the springs inside my body without needing the Reformer itself.
There are several compelling reasons to incorporate Reformer exercises onto the mat. Firstly, it can serve as a standalone workout for intermediate to advanced students. The challenging nature of these exercises provides an opportunity to elevate your practice and further develop strength, coordination, and control. Secondly, integrating Reformer exercises into a regular mat class can add an exciting element of variety, keeping long-time attendees engaged and motivated. Lastly, bridging the understanding of similarities between mat and Reformer exercises can deepen our overall Pilates practice, enhancing our mind-body connection and technique.
